AWTeen Events

School's out, summer is in full swing, and the AWTeen community is as busy as ever! Whether you're 9 or 99, you won't want to miss these upcoming events put on for the entire AW community!

AWSurvivor Challange IV.V : Tropical Island Mahem

With a new twisted approach differing this survivor from any other, AWSurvivor IV.V Tropical Island Mahem will have you island marooned for several hours! It will make you gasp for air thanks to it's fun full packed day of challenges! This survivor challenge is expected to be the oddest and coolest one yet! Contrary to the preceeding, this one is not created by the major event commitee, but by dedicated Awteen citizens proving wrong the myth that it requires power to accomplish a filled day in awteen.

This time it will be an ultimate show down between raging citizens, for the title of being the ultimate survivor! We are expecting less survivors than usual, but we gareenty you'll still be dragging on the ground at the end of the day! ** Hint : This means more chances for you to be the ultimate survivor ***

The voting for this survivor challenge will differ from the others, 6 tribes will be competiting one against the other but in this pattern, Tribe 1 against tribe 2, while 3 and 4, 5 and 6 will be having another competition at the same time. This means that 3 tribes can have immunity at once ! But after the merging, we will follow the "normal immunity" procedures.

Like the previous survivor challenges, most of the challenges will be openend to spectators or people who have been voted off but they will not be eligable to win a prize. The events will vary from a wacky race, to teleport trivia, to a maze, a paintball game and even a building contest ! The inscriptions as usual will be taken by the survivor bot 30 minutes in advance, so everyone will be able to claim himself/herself a spot. ( 1:30 pm vrt)

The utlimate survivor will walk away with a free p-10/10 world (Awcom was nice enough to let us rename it, Thanks :) and a couple other secret prizes will be added on the way! So free yourself at 2pm vrt on the 22nd of June 2002 and line yourself up for a day of fun and games.

AWTeen Generations Night

In mid- to late-June, AWTeen will hold its first ever Generations Night.  With the unveiling of projects that will change the way Activeworlds is used and the announcement of the leader of the next generation of AWTeen, be ready for a night to remember for all AW citizens!

AWTeen's Generations Night will consist of three separate but related events.  After opening remarks by an Activeworlds staff member, a skybox-enabled version of Thor, AWTeen's weather simulator, will be introduced.  For those who are unfamiliar, Thor debuted on July 27, 2001, after a TechTalk with Roland.  The application provides for a "smooth change" effect from day to evening to night and back again in AWTeen.  In addition, Thor supports a variety of different types of weather, and employs complicated algorithms to determine whether at a given time it should be sunny, a thunderstorm, or anywhere in between.

Unfortunately, with the release of 3.2 a month later, Thor became outdated after skyboxes were implemented in the Activeworlds browser.  For almost eight months, AWTeen's community volunteers searched long and hard for someone who had the technical expertise to make skyboxes for this important project.  Thanks to NoMad 1, this dream is about to become a reality when a new version of Thor is released with over 70 new skyboxes to create an atmosphere unparalleled elsewhere in the Universe.  The new version of Thor will be explained, demonstrated, and then implemented on Generations Night.

Furthermore, for the past few months, I, with the help of accomplished programmer Grimble, have been hard at work developing a revolutionary advancement - a full-featured terrain editor that will allow anyone in AWTeen, no matter their world rights, to edit the terrain under and around their buildings.  In addition, this editor has several advantages over the AW browser's implementation of terrain.  For example, the Activeworlds browser forces users to consider "transition textures" and ensure that these textures are rotated to the correct rotation to match up with adjacent terrain cells.  Furthermore, many users are confused by the terrain elevation points being southeast of where the actual cell is located, leading to a steep learning curve for those inexperienced with 3D design.

AWTeen's terrain editor simplifies the process of adding and changing terrain by specifying a texture for each elevation point, instead of the southeast corner of each cell.  The program then calculates whether any transition textures are necessary by looking at the textures applied to the corresponding cells, and makes changes as necessary to create a transition between cells with different textures.  This method makes the creation of an extended area of terrain possible without the creator having to worry about texture transitions and rotation, which traditionally are a large part of the terrain editing process.  In addition, the terrain editor takes encroachment into consideration, so users can't vandalize others' property by covering it with useless mountains.

After the terrain editor is enabled for all builders of AWTeen to use, the night will conclude with the announcement of who is to continue improving AWTeen after I fade off into the distance in August.  While I have been involved with the AWTeen community since January of 2000, the time comes for everyone to move on to try new things.  The evening will culminate with the announcement of AWTeen's new leader, who will lead the community into its fifth year.

Keep visiting AWTeen for more information and a definite date within the week.  You won't want to miss this historical night in Activeworlds history!

AWSurvivor Challenge V: Brimstone Cataclysm

Courtesy of sPiTFiRe

For years, AWTeen has been putting on events for its youth-filled community. Now the biggest of them all is back, for one last round: AWSURVIVOR CHALLENGE 5.

The AWSURVIVOR CHALLENGE series, made its way into AWTeen, all the time with record setting populations, and satisfying everyone who competed, watched, or was in any way involved! Each AWSURVIVOR CHALLENGE has never come up short in its quality, or prizes, making it something people from all around the Activeworlds universe can come and enjoy!

But of coarse, in AWTeen fashion, we saved the best for last: AWSURVIVOR CHALLENGE 5: Brimstone Cataclysm! Slated for mid-July, Brimstone Cataclysm is expected to be even more competitive that of AWSURVIVOR CHALLENGES past, because this one is more about actually surviving (as far as AW goes ;-)), rather than who can stay on the longest period of time. With the eight tribes fighting amongst each other for the right to stand supreme, and fighting amongst themselves for the right to stay in the tribe and not be the one voted off, there is sure to be chaos, which makes for good entertainment that is sure to everyone enjoy themselves! As far as entertainment goes, any AW Televion/Media stations are welcome, but no press passes will be released for special access :-).

Look for us in the July newsletter, with the official date and full information! Want to enjoy other great activities? Head to AWTeen, AW's place for teens!

Gear up people, because when it comes down to it, will you SURVIVE?
