After the successful meeting of the Active Worlds Historical Society on March 21 2010, we're pleased to report that work has begun on Phase 1 of "Making History in Active Worlds."
It was unanimously agreed that the Society will no longer concern itself with protecting citizens builds from vandalism, that it will instead focus on protecting citizen legacies and Active Worlds history through the collection and archiving of all things Active Worlds.
Active Worlds has been around since the summer of 1995 and other than the efforts of a few conscientious citizens, our history here could and still might be lost. To prevent this from happening we have begun Phase 1.
Phase 1: The Active Worlds Wiki
Our online encyclopedia, our wiki, is a logical choice to archive all things Active Worlds. It contains our complete help files, the source for SDK and has become crucial to Active Worlds.
A few pages that everyone should become familiar with:
As well as the Active Worlds Historical Society Pages:
Understand this is Phase 1.
Understand this is ongoing...
...yet at the end of the day, Active Worlds and the people and the wonderful things they've accomplished will be remembered always.
So, we need everyone's help now.
History is not written by one person, but by the collective spirit of an entire community.
If you see a citizen on the list (or even if you don't see them), that you remember, but is no longer here; If that citizen did something to better Active Worlds, with their spirit, with their friendships, or with their building skills, then it's up to us now to recognize these citizens.
If YOU have done anything in Active Worlds that you feel is important for our community and were wondering where this information could be archived, now is the time and here is the place.
Questions about any of this so far?? A discussion group has been started:
Active Worlds Historical Society on AW Forums
This will be a long journey, through some of Active Worlds' less glamorous times as well, but a journey, long overdue.
For those that are familiar with editing pages on the wiki, I welcome those of you to start. I will be adding detailed directions in the upcoming posts that should guide the newcomers that want to edit wiki pages for themselves. It's not hard, you only really need to know how to cut and paste, the rest is history (pun intended).
Anyone else that has a part of Active Worlds history and wishes to share, please feel free to post here and our staff of busy little bees will see that it gets in properly.
Phase 2
Identifying old and new builds we want to party in!!
Thanks everyone!!
Here's to making History Together!
