Get to Know Your Neighbors!

We think it would be great if everyone got a chance to get to know some of the volunteers in the community and to find out why they love AW so much.

This month we meet Poseidon and CableCar Gal.

PK Safety Tip: Never get angry, never strive to get even. If you are bothered by someone click on the avatar and mute the person. If really annoyed block their grams. If all that fails call a PK but avoid a fight and remember whoever loses their temper first loses.

Every now and then we pick a brand new Peacekeeper for the newsletter. This month it is Poseidon PK 19.

Poseidon is not new to Activeworlds having discovered AW when he was roughly 12 years old. A good friend of his at school showed it to him. She and Poseidon were both into a popular game called "Petz" which later turned into "Dogz" and "catz" (basically where you owned and cared for virtual animals) and both had a website, and it was one afternoon when browsing her site that he noticed a link: "ActiveWorlds" and he convinced her to introduce him to it. Poseidon learned to build, and became hooked :) He became a citizen in December of 1998.

He joined the Peacekeepers in late February of 2004. When asked why he joined he answered, "I joined the Peacekeepers because for a few years they really held some sort of intrigue for me - that and a good friend of mine, SkyZack, talked me into it. The PKs were something I originally did not like, but later as I matured and was a citizen for longer, the PK organization became something I had a great amount of respect for. In effect, I wanted to join a group of people I looked up to."

Poseidon had this to say about what he liked about being a PK. "Well, lol, I've not been a PK for a very long time; however, I would say that I enjoy the Ground Zero duty... that, and for the most part being able to help someone with various conflicts that may come up between them and other users. As far as the GZ patrol/duty- Its a lot of fun to have two hours a week when you can (and have to) sit down, and kind of talk with people at ground zero (while still doing a job). Sort of like forced socializing, with a purpose *grins* A good purpose!" His patrol time is normally Fridays at 6pm VRT to 8pm VRT... but may fluctuate over the next few weeks because he is in the process of moving.

Poseidon's main activity in activeworlds, other than the Peacekeepers, is his involvement with AWRPG. He was formerly the project manager of that world; however he now fills more of an advisory role for the staff there. He says, "It's a ton of fun :) Before the Peacekeepers, AWRPG had been an ongoing, two and a half year project." Poseidon invites everyone to visit AWRPG... "As a whole, my building in general kind of stinks, so there's not too much to see at those builds, but the work in AWRPG is incredibly beautiful. Take a few moments to check it out someday!"

Outside of AW his primary interests lie in the realm of cars, politics, architecture, and photography. His main interest there is Architecture, as it is what he will be studding in about a year or so. "Considering Architecture and Photography are things I've been involved with for about four years, I would say they're my main interests."

His message to all tourists and citizens of AW is; "My main message to all tourists and citizens of AW: have fun! We may not get along with one another all the time, however, the main point of this place is to have somewhere, where we can all come and sort of kick up our heels, and have a blast.. Let that be your focus. Have a wicked good time, but not in the sense of ruining someone else's fun ;) Beyond all else, have a blast!"

AW Guide Tip: The AW Guide world of Tours is open to all citizens and tourists. For those times when a Guide is not available there are teleports to all the worlds open to tourists and "self-guided" tours available to anyone interested in exploring the sights of Activeworlds on their own.

One of the orginal members of the AW Guides is CableCar Gal. She joined Activeworlds in 1998 immediately after a good friend showed her AW. She has been involved in a variety of AW volunteer activities since becoming a citizen. For several years she was a Gatekeeper and most notably she has hosted 4 reunions for AW citizens including the one currently scheduled for Laughlin, Nevada. She is a world owner and it is appropriately named "sfgate".

She had this to say about being a Guide: "What I like about being an AW Guide is that we can go beyond just answering questions as is done at the Gate. We have the ability to take the time needed to develop a one-on-one relationship and teach a tourist or a new citizen all about Activeworlds. We can take people too many different worlds. I know from personal experiences that giving this extended personal attention to a new comer makes a real difference. I have had tourist become citizens because I took the time not just to tell them how to walk or to fly but because we explored AW together while I taught them how to use the AW browser. I try to help them understand that in a virtual reality such as AW nearly anything is possible. It's all up to their imagination and desire to challenge their creativity. "

"I have also been apart of the planning and conducting of bingo games for tourists. The Guides is the only organization within AW that has hosted bingo for tourists. Tourists like to play bingo it makes them feel they are welcome in AW and they have fun."

It seems she is as much Guide in real life as she is in AW since she has hosted several AW citizens from Europe during their visit to the US.

When asked for her message to all the tourists and citizens of AW she said: "I encourage everyone to challenge their creativity. Even if they think they have none if they make an effort the results are often very surprising. I would encourage any citizen who truly enjoys helping others to join the AW Guides. The work that we do is extremely rewarding."
