Kellee Shares Some Experience and Wisdom

Hanging around in AWSchool I see a lot of Newbies confused with the concepts and ideals we have in Activeworlds. For that matter, you see it even in aw, private worlds and newsgroups. We are a fussy lot... clinging to our sense of community with pride and stubbornness, and sometimes not a little arrogance.

The best advice I can give a Newbie, in my opinion, is to sit back.... watch.... and size us up before plunging headlong into our midst, posting that post or entering that argument :o) Haven't we all come home from our first day of school or work and thought -well I could have handled THAT better? Its the same with AW, we are so much like the real world in most cases that its almost scary, but well worth taking the time to experience properly.

I have a theory that we can liken our personal aw space to the real world too. Think about it..... Joining some one is like popping over for a visit, and joining some one without knocking (telegramming first) is like checking to see if the door is open before you knock and if you find it open (allow any one to join) .... barging straight in.

Once you have telegrammed to find out if the person is happy to have a visitor, you then join them at their house and you build a sign in a gap in their land saying " I was here"....mmmm now would you do that to a persons house in RealWorld? would you scribble on their walls and expect them to be happy about it? LOL of course not :o)

Ohhh and would you hand over the keys (passwords) to your front door to a stranger? No way!!!! Please be careful of those passwords ppl..... I've noticed several clever little tricks that are designed to make thieves feel clever that they outwitted you. Make it a rule that NO ONE gets that citizen pass and only very trusted friends get your Privilege pass.

Another parallel to RW is private worlds, which in essence is just an aw build with better, more efficient fencing and more rights attached for the world owner. Now imagine..... you get talking to a friend and offer to build a lovely pergola in their back yard for them at no cost to them. Of course they are happy for you to do so but when you finish they realize that you have used the wrong colour paint and it clashes with the rest of their back yard. They have a choice.... risk offending you by saying something.... or quietly changing it and risking offending you. They change it and you are offended.... ok another two choices, if you used your wood (objects) you can remove the pergola and build it elsewhere.... or if you used their wood you can copy your pergola and build it elsewhere. but accusing them of all sorts of legal wrong doing? hehehe little over the top don't you think? Pergolas and virtual builds are NOT life and death and after all, would you want a pergola in your back yard that YOU didn't like? Also....them reacting to you removing your pergola and recreating it in your own back yard, with annoyance and / or abuse....mmmm well I know if I had supplied the wood and the sweat and you didn't appreciate it.... I would want my pergola back :o)

Judging ppl is so hard when we all come from such diverse and intercontinental backgrounds... even more so than the RW , we must refrain from Judging others. We ain't all perfect, and we don't all think alike and we don't all react to adversity sensibly...... remind you of the real world at all?? Its a lot of fun thou, isn't it :o)) its life and where would we be without it :o)

Another thing I've noticed is the high percentage of ppl willing to make a go of the community and spend their online time trying to help, PLEASE appreciate these ppl.... they are what make the community what it is.

Teachers, Peacekeepers, Gatekeepers, UTN Network etc etc. all deserve a round of applause for their efforts, regardless of whether they are completely perfect or just muddling through and doing their best. yahhhh clap clap :o)) good on ya guys

and thanks
