Things to Do in AW

Wow, can you believe the year is almost over? So, who is having the coolest New Year’s Party around? Is it you? I guess we will just have to wait and see. In a previous article I talked about having gone to a New Year’s Party in Broadway World. The party was put on by OneSummer and it was a really great party. I looked forward to that party the following year, then I deployed with the military for a year and came back hoping to see the party happening, just to find out that she wasn’t having one that year. Needless to say, I was a little disappointed. When someone can put on a good party and have people miss it when it doesn’t happen, that says something.

OneSummer, like many others (Flagg, chrispeg, Stacee, Digigurl, maki, Strike Rapier, Lensman, tunablues, dreamer2, TaLLan, SW Chris, Hyper Anthony, shli, MaxPoly and so many more in front and behind the scenes) have given so much of their time and expertise to Active Worlds to make it more enjoyable for all who come in to this universe. For most, if not all, of those volunteers, it is not something they have to do. They enjoy bringing people together in one fashion or another. They enjoy seeing an event, world, or programs succeed and making other users’ experiences that much better for it.

Volunteering

Seriously though, if you are looking for something to do and you’ve been around for a while, why not try being a volunteer for something in Active Worlds? The one thing you have to remember about being a volunteer is that you should do it because you want to. You also should not expect a lot of recognition for the things you do since most volunteer jobs tend to be what are called thankless jobs. Do it for yourself because you want to give and not because you want to receive. Those are the successful volunteers. The amount of time to give for volunteering does not always have to be a lot. Each program you decide to volunteer for can vary in time required. If you only have a little time to give write an article. If you have more time to give think about becoming a Peacekeeper or a Gatekeeper.

There are so many different areas to volunteer for. You could be an events coordinator and just plan on having a party or a contest or games or just a get together for something. You could write for the AWNewsletter on something that you think the Active Worlds community should know about. You could be a tour guide for AWTours. You could join the Gatekeepers and help new people out when they first enter the Active Worlds Universe. You could be a Peacekeeper and help keep order in Active Worlds. You could just help someone build a town or a world if you have a skill they are looking for. You could be a host for the Bingo games. You could help out different AW radio stations if they need another DJ since some work in shifts. You could help with birthday builds. If you like to teach and have something to teach, you could be a teacher in AWSchool.

The point is, if you truly want to help with something in Active Worlds there are ways of doing so. You would be helping others out that normally do things like this all the time and just want some time off. You could even start something yourself that you think Active Worlds might be missing and that you think would help out the community. So, start little or start big, but make it a New Year’s resolution to pick one thing to volunteer for in Active Worlds to make it a much better universe for the community!
