Get to Know Your Neighbors!

We think it would be great if everyone got a chance to get to know some of the volunteers in the community, and to find out why they love AW so much.

This month we meet Sir Chameleon who was recently recognized as GK of the Month.

How did you first hear of AW?

To be honest, this started 22 years ago…. I had my 1st chat session between The Netherlands and Boston University (at 300 bits per second). We at that time wrote a report which stated how the future would become regarding electronic communication. I found back that report last year after moving to a new house and decided to check what had come of our ideas at that time….. Well, 1 search on the Internet completely flabbergasted me….there was VR available. I compared a few 3d sites and quickly decided to choose for AW because of the quality they offer and the kind of people who visit AW.

How long have you been a citizen?

I have been a citizen now for almost a year and I enjoy every minute (hour….day….week) I spend in AW, having good (and fun) talks with people and building. In that year I met hundreds of people and some have become very good friends. I think AW gives a lot of people the possibility to “loosen up” in a way which (unfortunately) is not always accepted in RL (real life), but which we all need now and again. I know it works that way for me, coming to AW means relaxing from daily work (even working as a GK).

What made you want to become a GK?

I was impressed with the way GateKeepers welcome people and help you around when you arrive and I noticed it is a strong community with one goal: enhance the experience of visitors and through that your own experience. When I compare this to other chat rooms, then AW is far ahead. The fact that GK’s are volunteers strengthened my feeling that we were talking dedicated people here. So I was pleasantly surprised when SweetSuzie asked me if I’d like to join as a GK (never thought of it actually). So I thought about it, applied, had 2 great interviews and suddenly I “went bold”….I can tell you, that feels weird :). It is good there is a training program which helps you through all kinds of things you wouldn’t think of yourself…that also makes the GK organization very professional.

What do you enjoy most about being a GK?

Well…”most” is difficult to say, there are so many aspects and several things I enjoy about it. One is helping out new people and seeing how quickly you can make them enjoy AW. It is great when one comes back after months and says “thanks for helping me out then, I am a citizen now, if you need any help? Ask me :)”. Also the GK community is very good, you know you can always fall back on someone when needed.

Anything about yourself personally which you would like to include?

Hmmm, I always tell new visitors never to reveal personal information in public….so tough question ;-) Well, our two cats Vodka & Orange love the moving avatars on the screen, they can watch them for hours and I will need an anti-scratch guard for my laptop screen ;). Also AW has become part of my professional life as well….but that’s another story.
